METALLICA CONCERT REVIEW
14th October 2010 - Vector Arena - Auckland, New Zealand
It has been 22 year and 5 days since I first saw Metallica on their Justice tour back in October 1988 at Hammersmith Odeon - London, England. Boy have they come a long way since then.
This was probably my 7th Metallica concert but the first for maybe 15 years as I was not so into their commercial stuff since the Black album and during that time swayed more to Megadeth and Pantera for my source of heaviness (until Megadeth to went a bit commercial).
I have to admit I prefer the old stuff so those early concerts for me were better but last nights concert was certainly something else with the energy of the band, the deafening sound, pyrotechnics and stage presents of James Hetfield.
Metallica like to mix it up a little so seem to have a different set list each time they play so you never know what you are going to get. It seems a good way to get over the monotony of having to play the same songs day in day out for the guys in the band but I bet it makes it difficult for the sound, technical and lighting guys.
Tonight as expected, 5 of the 18 songs came from the Black album which basically launched Metallica into the commercial world and got some of the most singing from the crowd but they also did 7 from the first 3 albums (only 5 the night before) from their heavier period which got a lot of singing from the old school like me whilst the commercial fans were a little more subdued. Two interesting songs they played was Fight Fire with Fire and Phantom Lord to which I saw a lot of bewildered fans wondering what this was but to the rest of us hardcore fans, this is what Metallica is to us.
A lot of my favourite songs were actually played the night before which I could not get tickets for and included For Whom the Bell Tolls, Creeping Death, Wherever I May Roam, …And Justice for All and Blackened. Some of my favourites tonight were Ride the Lightning, Orion, Fight Fire with Fire and Seek and Destroy, one of the only songs to almost always be played at every Metallica concert.
All in all it was a great entertaining concert with something for everyone. It seemed to work well mixing and matching commercial with hardcore stuff but at the same time would have left both sets of commercial and hardcore fans a little flat in places whilst they waited for their type of song to be played. Maybe in the future they can do a real heavy night and then a more commercial night. That would put an end to one story I saw a blog for. It goes on to say how at the previous nights concert, there were 2 ladies sitting (not standing) in the front row of seats and got some blokes chucked out behind them because they spilt some beer on them whilst singing and headbanging. THIS IS METALLICA LADIES - STAND UP!!!!!!!! I got hit with about 3 pints of beer and felt a little sick by the time I got out as a chap in front of me smoked dope all night but that is what it is all about. If you don't like it don't come.
